Shira Lubelsky lives and works in Jerusalem. She holds a BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Department of Fine Arts (2024), and participated in a student exchange program at AVU in Prague, Czech Republic (2023). Shira is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in sculpture, painting, and installation. Her works explore the mechanisms of nature, loss, the cycle of life, and the interplay of humor and playfulness.

 

As a multidisciplinary artist, I create installations and spaces that immerse viewers in a clean, contemplative atmosphere, rich with weight and attentiveness. The compositions in my works generate emotional crescendos and a melody that balances the futility of unnecessary death with the sanctity of life’s end and the duality between them. I have always been drawn to experimenting with techniques and materials: my works include oil paintings, clay sculptures, castings from various materials and molds, video art, woodworking, and more.

 

Psychological mechanisms, particularly those rooted in the subconscious, fascinate me. In my studio, I attempt to recreate them—especially those I have yet to understand, such as the mechanisms of grief and loss.

My art deals with the sanctity of death and materiality, often through animals we encounter in our daily lives. The act of preservation recurs throughout my work—sometimes as taxidermy or embalming of an animal, and sometimes as a frozen representation of death through sculpture or painting. By freezing the organic and perishable state of the animal, I place it in a limbo from which there is no escape, compelling the viewer to confront the dead body without averting their gaze. Even a cat struck on the roadside or a crow crushed on a park lawn holds its own sanctity. I invite us to look together, feel these moments, and even laugh. Death is here, life is too, and I propose we face them both, directly and openly.
